NITs and IIITs
The national institutes of technology and information technology institutes, admitting on JEE Main rank.
Ministry of Education · India
Open now, no closing date announcedAdmission on JEE Main rank through JoSAA and CSAB counselling.
Why this one matters
The home state quota is the most under-used advantage in Indian engineering admission. A rank that reaches nothing elsewhere can reach the NIT in your own state, and families routinely never check.
What it covers
admission route. Levels funded: undergraduate, postgraduate.
Who can apply
- You must be a citizen of India
Where applications fail
Most rejected applications are not ineligible students. They are eligible students who missed a step.
- Home state quota is decided by where you passed Class 12, not by domicile or birth. Check which state you count as before filling choices.
- CSAB runs special rounds after JoSAA ends, and seats do appear there. Students who stop after JoSAA never see them.
- Filling too few choices is the most common way a good rank produces no seat.
If this one is not for you
Being ruled out of a scheme is not the same as having no options. Here is what is still open.
- Rank too low for the home state NIT? State engineering entrances reach state quota seats at state colleges, usually at lower fees than private options.
- Nothing in JoSAA or CSAB? A polytechnic diploma followed by lateral entry reaches the same degree from the second year.
- Willing to look beyond engineering? Agriculture, maritime, design and pure science all have their own national entrances at this stage.
