Why this one matters

The counselling process decides more outcomes than the exam does. Students with identical ranks end up in very different places depending on how they fill their choices, and almost nobody is taught how to do that.

Where applications fail

Most rejected applications are not ineligible students. They are eligible students who missed a step.

• JoSAA runs in rounds. Withdrawing or failing to confirm at the right stage forfeits a seat you had already earned.
• There is a limit on JEE Advanced attempts, counted from the year you first became eligible. A casual drop year can use one up without a plan.
• Fee waivers and reductions exist by family income and category, and are applied for at admission rather than automatically.

If this one is not for you

Being ruled out of a scheme is not the same as having no options. Here is what is still open.

• Did not clear JEE Advanced? A JEE Main rank alone reaches the NITs, IIITs and centrally funded institutions, which are strong outcomes in their own right.
• Missed both? State entrances reach state quota seats, and lateral entry from a polytechnic diploma reaches the second year of a degree.
• Wanted research rather than engineering? The IISERs, IIST and NISER admit through their own routes.
