Deemed and private universities
Privately run universities with degree-granting status, ranging widely in cost, entrance route and selectivity.
University Grants Commission regulated · India
Open now, no closing date announcedAdmission through the university's own entrance test, a national score, or direct application, depending on the institution.
Why this one matters
This is where most families lose the most money, because the same degree at the same university can cost several times more through one admission route than another, and agents earn on the expensive route.
What it covers
admission route. Levels funded: undergraduate, postgraduate.
Who can apply
- You must be a citizen of India
Where applications fail
Most rejected applications are not ineligible students. They are eligible students who missed a step.
- Ask which route you are being offered — merit, management or NRI — and what each costs. The difference is often several lakh rupees a year for identical teaching.
- Check the institution's recognition status with the UGC and the relevant professional council before paying anything. Recognition affects whether your degree is accepted for government jobs and further study.
- An agent's recommendation may carry a commission. Ask directly whether they are paid by the institution, and ask in writing.
If this one is not for you
Being ruled out of a scheme is not the same as having no options. Here is what is still open.
- Cost the barrier? State universities and government colleges reach the same degrees at a fraction of the fee, through state entrances.
- Need funding? CGFSEL covers collateral-free borrowing and PM Vidyalaxmi applies where the institution is on the QHEI list.
- Unsure about recognition? Check the UGC and the relevant council's own lists before any payment, and keep the printout.
