Rashtriya Military Schools

A small group of residential schools run directly by the Ministry of Defence, open to civilians as well as children of service personnel, and now co-educational.

Admission at Class 6 and Class 9 through the RMS Common Entrance Test, followed by an interview and a medical examination.

Why this one matters

Fewer schools than the Sainik system and correspondingly less known, which means fewer applicants per seat. Civilian children are eligible, a fact most families assume is not true.

Where applications fail

Most rejected applications are not ineligible students. They are eligible students who missed a step.

There are only a handful of these schools nationally, so the seat count is small and the notification is easy to miss.
Civilian candidates are eligible but pay a higher fee than children of service personnel. Check which category you fall in before budgeting.
Selection is a written test, then an interview, then a medical. Clearing the paper is one stage of three.

If this one is not for you

Being ruled out of a scheme is not the same as having no options. Here is what is still open.

Missed the age band? Sainik Schools admit at Class 6 and Class 9 on their own age rules, and JNV at Class 6, 9 and 11.
Want the defence route without a military school? The NDA examination after Class 12 does not care which school you attended.
