Kendriya Vidyalaya
Central government schools following CBSE, with admission governed by published priority categories rather than by an entrance test at Class 1.

Open now, no closing date announcedClass 1 admission runs on an annual online registration, generally in the first half of the calendar year. Other classes are filled against vacancies.
Why this one matters
Low fees, a consistent CBSE curriculum across the country, and transfer between branches — which matters enormously for families who move. Admission is rule-based and published, so a family can work out its own position in advance rather than guessing.
What it covers
tuition. Levels funded: higher secondary.
Who can apply
- You must be a citizen of India
Where applications fail
Most rejected applications are not ineligible students. They are eligible students who missed a step.
- Class 1 admission is by priority category and, where applications exceed seats, by lottery. It is not first-come-first-served, so applying early confers no advantage beyond meeting the deadline.
- Children of transferable central government employees sit highest in the priority order. Families outside that group are competing for a much smaller share of seats and should plan accordingly.
- Admission above Class 1 depends entirely on a vacancy existing in that class at that branch. There may be none, and no amount of eligibility creates a seat.
- Transfer between Kendriya Vidyalayas is a genuine benefit for families who relocate, but it still requires a vacancy at the receiving branch.
If this one is not for you
Being ruled out of a scheme is not the same as having no options. Here is what is still open.
- No priority category and no vacancy? JNV admits by examination on merit with no category requirement, and is free from Class 6 to 8.
- Need a residential option? Sainik Schools, Eklavya schools and state residential schools all admit by examination.
- Looking only for a CBSE curriculum? Many state and private schools follow CBSE. Use the school finder to filter by board and area instead.
